I own a fabric store that is both online and brick and mortar. Fabric generally comes on 15 yard bolts and I need something that will allow me to track the inventory when someone buys say, 1/4 yard of fabric in the store and someone else buys 1/2 yard online. I need an app that will subtract both of those measurements from the total 15 yards and report that I have 14 1/4 yards left in inventory.
It seems to me that this is just math running in the background, but I must be missing something because no one seems to have solved this issue. There is a great need for this as I have seen discussions about chocolatiers needing to sell by the gram and butchers by the pound.
Michelle
ok just sent you an email.
Michelle allow me to talk myself out of a job. This is normally a conceptual problem with inventory values
It may or may not be a hassle to deal with day to day you decide.*
Lets boil down how inventory levels can be handled online.
Is it minus 1 to a products inventory only when an entire bolt is sold? No
Say there's 15 yards(15 inventory units) to a bolt, but since it's not sold in increments sold of 1 yard, how much inventory is there in 1 bolt?
In the example given the LCD is 1/4yd so every bolt is made of 15*(100/25) =60 inventory units.
That means a customer that buys 1/2 is buying 2 units of inventory (1/4yd)
Lets say 1ft square , how many inventory units does that make 1 physical bolt worth?
The LCD unit is generally based on the bare minimum that a business will ship
So this leaves making the theme reflect these increments(inventory units) when a customer adds inventory to thier cart.
And if selling bolts how those are handled as it puts multiple units into the cart at once, or there should be a seperate product for bolts since it's costs picking, packing & shipping factors are different.
*A side effect of this is you personally will begin to differently view how merchandise scales.
Hi Michelle,
Britton here with the Shopify support team.
I think that what Paul is saying above pretty much hits the nail on the head with this one but wanted to give you an alternative as well. The app "Buy the Measurement" can help with these kinds of issues as well: https://apps.shopify.com/buy-the-measurement.
I hope that helps make your fractional sales easier!

Paul and Britton,
Thanks for your input, but I think I'm not communicating our needs very well. Customers buy in many different increments (like 1/3 yard, 7/8 yard, etc). So, it's impossible to calculate how many units I have available in inventory if I start breaking it down into all possibilities. I just want something that will subtract whatever unit is purchased from the total of 15 yards. I have over 800 bolts of fabric in the store and have had several issues of overselling on the website because someone bought the fabric remaining on the bolt in the physical store.
I looked at Buy the Measure, but they only calculate in whole units. So their suggestion was for me to only sell my fabric by the foot. That is just not a viable solution.
@Britton Jenner, (with michelles /nod) can we get this topic moved to the discussion/design forum , until we can nail down michelles requirements|options.
I've got a clearer picture now with that 7/8yrd example, yikes.
Michelle i looked at http://urbanspools.com/ and most products i saw are sold in 1/2yrd increments , so this is a pressing need to get away from webstore inflexibility? (Industry tradition vs technical hurdle)
What is the smallest size|measurement the business will ship? 1/32 yard...?
How are customers giving this information on other sites? If it's just a input box they can put any number in that seems...problematic for systems that need harder numbers.
We limit the website fabric sales to 1/2 increments, and we list individual bolts. But in the store, we allow any size cut with 1/8 yard minimum (4.5"). In the store, we are not tracking invididual bolts, we just created a product called Cotton Fabric and created variants for all of the different cuts. So, in essence we aren't tracking fabric inventory at all. We have now reached a level of inventory where this is crazy not to be tracking it. We constantly have someone buy fabric online, but when we go to fulfill the order, we actually sold out of that bolt in the retail store. That is why I need something that can subtract both instore sales and online sales from that particular bolt.
Hi everyone,
I am building a Shopify store and we want to provide Cash on Delivery (COD) to some selected Zipcode. Normal payment options should come in all the zipcode and products but the COD option should come only on some preselected Zipcode. After searching a lot for an app for this purpose I found nothing. Let me know if you know any app which can achieve this or you know any way to make this happen.
Thank you so much in advance.

We have a custom theme we bought from a developer that never finished it properly and seems to have disappeared after dragging his feet over fixing his work without charging us more. Looking for someone to clean up his work or design us a new, fully working theme with a similar clean look (which we did like). Later on we will have a project to design a matching wordpress site that will be used to compete companies similar to ours (which we will show you if you contact us). If you charge hidden fees or try to put clients on contracts for any assistance after working on projects, we are not the client for you. Looking for someone that is fair and straight up.
Let us know if you are interested.
Thanks!
